This junior coding club introduces children to basic coding concepts and helps them develop their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills. With a variety of engaging and educational activities delivered by expert teachers, students are introduced to coding while also developing their critical thinking, logic reasoning, and problem solving skills.
This club covers all the basic concepts of coding and gets children familiar with how computers work. Through a series of fun game making and animation creating activities, students develop an understanding of how code works and gain the ability to perform a range of functions using code.
Students are introduced to basic coding concepts including sequence, selection, and repetition. Using creative, project-based exercises, our experienced teachers give students a head start in the National Curriculum in Computing while assessing their progress throughout the club with various plenaries and assessments.
Children learn how to code using one of the most popular children’s coding languages - Scratch. With its easy to understand block-based format, Scratch gives new coders the tools to rapidly create and experiment with code. Our dedicated teacher guides students through a set of projects teaching basic coding concepts, which are applied as they create games and animations. Later on, they learn how to incorporate sounds into their coding projects.
Children also get to develop their touch-typing skills, practice mouse clicks and keyboard letter recognition, later improving their efficiency and literacy.
Students learn about electronics and computation beyond the screen with some hands-on lessons in robotics by exploring Ozobots - adorable little robots that are able to perform functions based on coloured codes.
By attending this club, students become confident users of technology. They develop touch-typing skills, gain confidence with their mouse clicks, and understand how computers work.
By making a variety of games and animations in Scratch, students gain an understanding of functions, coordinates, loops and variables. They explore their creativity by designing games, animations, and adding sounds to their creations. They start understanding how certain blocks of code bring different outcomes to their projects, and start learning about debugging and how to fix problems.
Students develop knowledge in the following topics:
Computer literacy: using the keyboard and mouse with ease
Algorithms: concepts and application
Beginner coding concepts: conditionals, debugging, sequences and loops
Programming characters to move and respond
Identifying and solving problems
Designing and creating games
Building and programming robots
Introduction to electricity and circuits
Continue your child’s development:
As with learning any language, coding requires a lot of time and repetition. We always prepare new content and recommend joining the club next term.
You can also develop your child’s skills even further at one of our Scratch and Robotics, Animation and Coding, or Minecraft Modding holiday camps. New activities await all young coders at our holiday camps!
